Gather & Expand: A journey into backbending

Every time you take a step or reach for something, your spine moves. These movements can be big or small. They can gather attention inward and they can expand attention outward. Often, these movements are both gathering and expanding simultaneously.

This online series is designed to explore spinal extension - the infamous backbends of yoga. We will do backbends as a small, simple movements, like a young child learning to lift their head for the first time during “tummy time”. And as a large, expressive possibility such as Ustrasana (camel) and Natrajasana (king dancer).

This journey will encourage you to connect from limbs to center, and center to limbs.

  • Week One: Feeling the waves and pulses of your spine and breath.

  • Week Two: How do you gather inward while you are expanding outward?

  • Week Three: How do your limbs move your spine?

  • Week Four: How do you connect to the earth?
